David Goffin upsets Roger Federer to reach ATP Finals Title Match
David Goffin upset Roger Federer to reach the final of the ATP Finals 6-2, 3-6, 4-6. Federer was the clear favorite to win the match as he held an overwhelming 6-0 match record against David Goffin. However, Goffin is always a dangerous opponent and he was out to avenge his loss to Federer at the Swiss indoor Basel event where he lost 6-1, 6-2 to Federer.
Federer has been sublime during this tournament, outclassing his opponents easily. The match started with Federer immediately breaking Goffin's serve and outclassing the Belgian during the first set. however Goffin was undeterred as he started the 2nd set with dogged, determined play. He held his first service game and then proceeded to break Federer's serve with an amazing whipped forehand that Federer watched helplessly blaze by him. Goffin was able to hold his serve from there and keep Federer at bay to even the match.
Roger Federer's career has been defined by calmness and an uncanny ability to break resolute opponents in the critical moments of matches. However, this was not to be one of those matches. Goffin was in the zone and was playing at an extremely high level. he found a way to break Federer serve at 1-1 with a fearless backhand up the line and then smashed Federer's weak return into the open court. He then proceeded to keep Federer at bay by playing without fear and going for the angles. He then proceeded to win the match with a hard serve that Federer could only put meekly into the net.
Goffin now proceeds to the final where he will play the winner of the match between Jack Sock and Grigor Dimitrov.
